Originally formed in the war-torn Angola of 1980, Afra Sound Star combined such styles as samba, funk, and reggae with well-thought-out lyrics to produce a unique and satisfying sound. They released their self-titled first album in 1986. Later that same year, after having taken their home country by storm, they relocated across the ocean to Brazil, quickly making a name for themselves in their new homeland.
Beginning in the 1990s, they took their show on the road again, this time headed to Portugal. Their stay there brought them new fans and saw the release of their next three albums, Saparam (1991), Ydeble (1992), and Absaite (1993). Next the group moved to Belgium where they recorded Soko Soke, released in 1995.
